25 years after the Soviet troops’ retreat, Kabul is preparing to live without the Americans and their allies. NATO’s military coalition is to leave Afghanistan, with the feeling of things being unfinished. It is leaving behind it a devastated country. It is also leaving behind a section of society that is always more vulnerable in countries in conflict – women.

In Kabul, the women walk discretely among the men, like silent shadows. Officially, since the fall of the Taliban, Afghan women have the right to study and work. But in reality, they are invisible. Yet at the military base in Kabul, one woman has managed to make her mark. 22 year-old Lieutenant Niloofar Rahmani is the only woman pilot in the Afghan army.
