Severely affected by the Covid epidemic, Belgium is burying its dead. In Brussels, Evere's only multi-faith cemetery is overwhelmed by the influx of Muslim dead.
Due to a health ban, the body of the deceased cannot be repatriated by the families to their country of origin, as tradition requires. In order to ensure the daily burials may proceed efficiently, the cemetery's three gravediggers are assisted by a dozen Muslim volunteers.
Adolescents, adults and retirees all lend a hand by digging graves and accompanying the families in their mourning. This solidarity, while respecting funeral rites, is a sign of trust for families of Muslim faith.
