Three years of drought caused the Vosges forest to wither away, increasing the risk of fire.

Since 2018, the Vosges forest has been a victim of drought and heat waves. The trees are literally drying out in the ground. A consequence of global warming that worries the fire department because it increases the risk of fire. Faced with this situation, all those who have stakes in the forest are preparing: whatever the scenario, global warming will force them to adapt.

In 2020, the French National Forests Office (NFO) has identified 218,305 hectares of public forest affected by tree dieback. The lack of rain for several years has greatly weakened the trees. And this fragility is favoring the spread of insect pests. The spruce forests of many European countries are affected by an epidemic of bark beetles: France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Czech Republic, Poland...

Beyond the scale of the decline, it is the sheer number of species affected that is worrying : beech, fir, but also oak and pine. According to the NFO, this is the first time a phenomenon of such magnitude has been observed.
To cope with the consequences of global warming, foresters are trying to find solutions designed to protect the forest by enabling it to adapt.
