The Romanian healthcare system cannot keep up with 10,000 new cases of covid19 per day; the mortality rate has soared between 70 and 90 per cent – the highest in the EU. Its economy was already in poor shape, now the crisis deepens.

Outdated medical equipment, few drugs, few specialists: fraud, bribes and poor hospital management have wreaked havoc on the country’s medical facilities, whose doctors leave to practice elsewhere in Europe. A lack of investment and widespread corruption are plaguing the Romanian healthcare system, which has been overwhelmed by the outbreak of the virus.
Romanians are dismayed and certainly do not trust in their government to get things back on an even keel. 30% of Romanians doubt the coronavirus even exists and seek comfort from the Orthodox Church, which is draining hundreds of faithful in defiance of the pandemic.
