The success of the “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies is closely related to the personalities of their heroes, the Hobbits, small fragile beings that are plunged into a vast fantastical world. But where do these Hobbits come from?

To write his novels, Tolkien took his inspiration from numerous European legends. The first stage of his quest for the sources of the imaginary world takes illustrator John Howe to France, to the forest of Brocéliane. Story teller Nicolas Mezzalira reveals the legend of Merlin to him: his birth, his romance with the Lady of the Lake, and his first prophecy. The numerous resemblances to the character of the magician Gandalf reveal the extent of Tolkien’s force and originality. But there is still no trace of the Hobbits: we must pursue our adventure!
