Every year, after the summer floods, the inhabitants of the Sin Kin village build a bridge exclusively from of bamboo, in a remarkable burst of solidarity.
In the North of Myanmar (formerly Burma), is one of the world’s longest bridges. It connects the Sin Kin village with the rest of the country. Every summer, during the rainy season, the Irrawaddy river floods and destroys the frail interconnected bamboo constructions that have been built without metal or screws. The village can be accessed only by boat and its inhabitants have trouble stocking up on supplies. Besides, taking the boat is expensive and dangerous. The entire village therefore patiently waits for the flood to end. As soon as the water level decreases, bamboo harvesting can resume and the bridge is rebuilt.
