In Detroit, the rust is going green. The city that is the symbol of the US "rust belt", the fallen capital of the automobile, is now witnessing thousands of gardens blooming in its back yards, its parks and its wasteland.

Urban agriculture already supplies up to 15% of the city's in-season fruit and vegetable requirements. It is practiced by defenders of healthy and organic food, like Greg Willerer, as well as by activists of the Black cause who want to break the African-American community's dependence on industrial food.
