Like the practice of using plants for medicine, using bees - or apitherapy - also appears to be universal. As referred to on Egyptian papyrus, and by Hippocrates and Avicenna, the medicinal properties of the produce of the hive have been known about for a long time.
But in Europe, one country is leading a trend that is extolling its virtues – Romania. Bernard sets out to meet a passionate doctor and beekeeper, Doctor Eugen Stefan, in the magnificent region of Vrancea. In his surgery in town, he treats his patients by stinging them with stings from live bees that have come from his hives. In an attempt to discover the traditional sources of this knowledge, Bernard also visits Illinca, a healer, who inherited her knowledge of the benefits of honey, propolis and venom from her family.
