Despite the fierce fighting in the west of Syria, since the beginning of the revolution, the north east of the country has been relatively spared.

The Kurds, who populate the region and were for a long time oppressed by the Damascus regime, fear the Sunni opposition just as much, and for now, confine themselves to demonstrating peacefully. To avoid the conflict spreading, Bachar el-Assad finally conceded them new rights, and since mid-July, they have even taken control of several towns.
For the first time, an ARTE Reportage team managed to penetrate the oil-rich region of Syrian Kurdistan. Autonomy is within reach for the population, but many threats remain.
