Esther Madudu is a 33-year-old midwife at the Katine health centre, which is located about two hundred kilometres from the Ugandan capital. Here, there is no electricity and the solar panels are no longer working. There are only two midwives at the dispensary, and on average they assist five women a day giving birth.

In antenatal care, they look after about forty women a day, from Monday to Friday. They are also in charge of psychological monitoring, the prevention and treatment of malaria, and vaccinations. Even though Esther sometimes finds it hard to balance her family life with her work, there is no question of her stopping! She leads her life at the bedside of others, which today has earned her a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize 2015.
