The Casa Xochiquetzal is a place unlike any other: this building, located in one of the ill-reputed districts of Mexico City, serves as a retirement home for about twenty elderly prostitutes.

Without this place – which was handed over free of charge to an association by the municipal government of Mexico City - the twenty or so sex workers, who are now over 60 years old and who have found refuge there, would have been forced to live on the streets. Instead, for the last 10 years, they have had a roof over their heads, and have found dignity and a little income, by selling their cooking and some craftwork. The shelter enables the district’s sex workers to organise their lives, to take care of themselves and to rest a little. It is not a brothel behind closed doors - on the contrary, its director has opened the place up to life and to the city. Sonia, a former prostitute, has found a degree of peace and happiness there, and hopes her experience will inspire other pensioners of prostitution.
