The small town of San Lucas Quiavini is located at the foot of the mountains in the Oaxaca Valley, the most American Indian region of Mexico. A fifth of the population in the region does not speak Spanish, and yet Catholic fervour is omnipresent.

Bernard sets out to meet Paulina, a traditional midwife or “partera”, the most respected category of traditional doctor. Paulina is a Zapotec, one of the country’s major indigenous peoples, whose civilisation has prospered for nearly two thousand years. In addition to their qualification as midwifes, these women often double up as “curanderas”, traditional doctors with generalist knowledge on disease and care. Paulina’s role also involves healing the souls of her fellow citizens, who frequently suffer from “susto”, a highly cultural form of emotional shock.
