In the Philippines - a constellation of 7,000 islands in the Pacific Ocean - it is often said that the sea links the people. But something else also links the inhabitants of this gigantic “Tower of Babel” archipelago - Hilot, an ancient art of healing performed through touch.
Its practitioners, the manghihilot, use nothing but their hands and coconut oil. In a village not far from Manila, Bernard goes to meet Angelita Calderon, a cheerful woman, and a prominent figure in her village. She earns her living as a seamstress, and does not charge for any of her Hilot treatments. Alongside Angelita, Bernard discovers a medical tradition based on pressure points and manual manipulation.
