The figures published by Greenpeace are staggering: 320 million people in China do not have access to drinking water, and 190 million people in China consume polluted water.

In the Huai Basin industrial area, the presence of ammonia in the river is killing large numbers of fish. The Chinese economic development model, an ambitious one without scruples, is also threatening the health of millions of people. River and tap water has been found to contain carcinogenic substances, and residents now use only rainwater for washing, drinking and watering their gardens.

The government is investing billions of Euros in the country’s economic development, but nothing - or nearly nothing - is done to defend the environment. Greenpeace has discreetly set up its headquarters in Beijing and has already been the subject of 10,000 articles in the press in China, where the will to inform the population about environmental issues is modestly starting to make its mark.
