In 1705, the architect John Vanbrugh and the gardener Henry Wise designed the grounds of Blenheim Palace as a formal garden intended to symbolize the political and military stature of its owners, the dukes of Marlborough.

Blenheim's grounds have been through numerous changes as successive owners and gardeners sought to make their mark. Brown famously designed gardens to mimic the landscapes in Romantic paintings. He completely remodeled the grounds of Blenheim Palace some 60 years after their creation.
