On 23 May 1992, 500 kilograms of explosives blew up judge Giovanni Falcone’s car. He died, along with his wife and 4 members of his escort. At the time, everyone suspected a vendetta by the fearsome Sicilian mafia, Cosa Nostra, orchestrated by its chief Toto Riina.
20 years after the spectacular assassination of Judge Falcone, a historic trial opened in Palermo. For the first time in Italian history, the Tribunal of Palermo was to judge 5 members of the mafia, 4 politicians and 3 members of the Italian Carabinieri. They were all accused of having taken part in secret negotiations carried out between the State and Cosa Nostra, and of having threatened the integrity of the Italian Republic. The aim of these negotiations was to obtain the end of the war, a ruthless war started shortly before Judge Falcone’s death. It took 20 years for the Palermo judges to succeed in opening this explosive trial, in an Italy that is still rather reticent to hear certain truths.
