Every year in May, a peaceful town in Kentucky in the southern United States, turns into a theater of war. Its residents and numerous outside visitors are busy reenacting the Battle of Sacramento: it pitted Confederate cavalry against a Union force on December 28, 1861.

The horses are specially trained for the famous battle's annual re-enactment, where Union and Confederate armies defied each other in a deluge of rifle and cannonball fire. For Doug Key, as for most “southerners”, their homeland, family and friends are the most precious gift they were given, whether black or white. Each year the battle is re-enacted – and with it the South's vision of what was at stake in the American Civil War.
