The ancestral territory of the Nez-Percés lay in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. In 1877, 750 members of this tribe refused to settle on a reservation, which reduced their land and freedom of action to a trickle. They decided to flee to Canada, embarking on a dangerous 2,000 km trek through the Rocky Mountains. They took with them 2,000 horses, mainly appaloosas, a breed bred by these Amerindians.
