You see them everywhere, whether in the rich quarters, the old city, at the harbour of the Bosporus - rolled-up balls of fur, poured down like decoration.

Hundreds of thousands of stray animals live in the city of 15 million - more than in any other European metropolis. The relationship between the people of Istanbul and the street cats is ambivalent. Although many residents take care of the strays, they usually don't let the animals into their homes. There are small wooden houses for the cats all over the city, and they are fed and cared for. According to legend, a cat saved Mohammed from a snake bite. Since then, they have been an expression of the Islamic faith. Since 2004, the city has even enacted an animal protection law to "recognise the rights of stray pets".
