The Pale di San Martino is one of the most spectacular spots in the Dolomites. A company of guides was created there more than a century ago. To join this elite corps, you not only have to have solid experience as a mountaineer, climber and guide, but you also have to pass a probationary examination.
Rocco Romagna is the leader of the “Eagles of San Martino”. The main task of these alpine guides is to ensure the safety of climbers and tourists who want to climb these great rock faces but are not always aware of the difficulty. The guides must therefore assess the climbers’ physical condition and level and, if necessary, adapt the route. Livio Pinese, in his thirties, is an experienced climber; but, despite years of training and education, he has not yet passed the probationary exam that will make him a “San Martino Eagle”.
