The Piaroa people in Venezuela have a special relationship with mygale spiders. They hunt them during the rainy season and believe they have mystical properties.

The Piaroa people have always considered the giant mygale spiders that live in the Venezuelan equatorial forests to be special. During the rainy season, they capture them for food. The rest of the year, shamans consider them to be intermediaries between the world of the dead and the world of the living. But as the last of the Piaroa families are converting to Christianity, the shamans’ power is declining, and the role that the spiders play is diminishing too.
