For centuries, in this small Italian village, the end of winter has been celebrated with a frenzied carnival where each costume is made by the inhabitants themselves. In the streets, dances see the Belli, beauty and wealth, and the Brutti, ugliness and poverty, clash.
Once a year, the inhabitants of Schignano trade their identity for an unbridled and euphoric carnival. The "Belli" and "Brutti" mimic wild and raging scenes with copious amounts of alcohol. With Battista, an old mask sculptor well known in the region, Geo Reportage discovers the symbolism of costumes. The "handsome" traveled the world and made a fortune. His belly embodies his wealth, he wears flashy jewels, big flowered hats, plays important and shows arrogance. The "ugly" is quite the opposite: his life has turned out badly, he drinks too much, is dressed in clothes and he harbors an immense anger towards the Bellis.
