After Régis Wargnier in Nepal, Pierre Schoeller in Iraq, and Agnès Merlet in Lebanon, Claire Denis set out to meet refugees and make a personal film, based on the principle of giving the filmmaker carte blanche.
Claire Denis filmed in East Chad, close to the border with Sudan, in the Breidjing camp, which is home to over 40,000 refugees from Darfur. What used to be a row of tents, just ten years ago, has today become a veritable city, in which the filmmaker meets the occupants. After spending 7 days in the camp, the filmmaker was able to capture a rarely described reality, including a school on strike, an effective hospital, a woman builder, a doubt-ridden youth and people with great dignity.
