10 years after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans remains traumatised by the catastrophe that flooded 85% of the city. Faced with ineffective administration, only the determination of the city’s inhabitants has enabled the cultural capital of Louisiana to rise again. But are they now safe?

The impressive new levees in New Orleans could give that impression. But southern Louisiana is disappearing. Erosion is thought to be happening faster there than anywhere else in the world, and in the process, Louisiana is losing its natural protection from hurricanes: its marches, which have been devastated by intensive oil exploitation.

To save the marshes, the State has launched a vast, hugely expensive, scientific plan for the coming 50 years. Taken to court for the damage caused to the marshes, will the oil companies have to foot the bill one day?  Unlikely: tackling the world of oil in Louisiana is akin to parricide in this poor region where industry reigns supreme. Yet it is the future of New Orleans - and that of the entire Mississippi Delta - that is at stake.
