"The world gives us its waste, we give music back to the world" it is the slogan of the orchestra of Cateura, an impoverished district of the Paraguayan capital, where 25,000 people live just a few metres away from Asuncion's rubbish tip...

Could music bring about change? In 2006, that was Favio Chavez&rsquo's original idea. As buying new instruments was out of the question, he made them out of materials recovered from landfill: a saxophone made from a piece of guttering and a few coins, a violin from a paint pot and a fork, and a guitar from old tin cans - instruments for playing all kinds of music, from Mozart to Metallica.

For 3 years now, the orchestra of Cateura and its 40 musicians has been travelling the world. Their tours serve to fund the orchestra’s social projects: 150 children from the district are now having lessons at the music school and some are entering further education paid for by universities. The profits have also enabled some families to be re-housed.
