Near Dubrovnik in Croatia, the coast makes for a magnificent setting overlooking the Adriatic Sea. In this dry and wild land, the arboretum of Trsteno is a clear exception.
Its plateau is irrigated by a spring that was man-made over the course of five centuries. This land was originally hosting a farm. In the sixteenth century, a family of aristocrats from the small Republic of Dubrovnik – the Gucetic-Gozze – bought a holiday accommodation; thanks to the water flowing in their estate, they could develop their decorative garden and plant numerous trees. Little by little, their estate shifted into an arboretum. It was destroyed numerous times – by earthquakes, wars and fires – but it was rebuilt each time; Trsteno is a testament to the perpetual fight between man and nature.
