Since the end of 2015, Ethiopia has been facing its “worst drought for 50 years”, according to the UN. It has partly been caused by the meteorological phenomenon El Nino, which has affected the whole of East Africa.
Recent rain may have brought green grass to certain regions, but no crops are growing. Inhabitants refer to the situation as the “green drought”. The grass is deceptive because water is scarce. The region of Afar, mainly populated by nomadic livestock breeders, has been hit the hardest. Inhabitants there are lacking water, food and pastures for their herds. In the other agricultural regions, farmers have experienced very poor harvests. Today, nearly 10 million people need emergency food aid. According to Unicef, this figure could rise to 18 million in the coming months, which amounts to one in five Ethiopians.
