The Rio Doce, Brazil’s fifth largest river, is facing an ecological catastrophe.

Locals of Bento Rodrigues, the town covered in toxic mud that washed over the valley, have been re-housed in a neighbouring town, where they are living off a small compensation paid by the Samarco mining company. At the mouth of the Rio Doce, the small resort of Regência, which once attracted tourists and surfers, is now deserted.
Unemployment is following on from despair. The sea is polluted and fishing is forbidden, here, as well as all over the river. The world giants of iron extraction, the Brazilian multinational Vale and the Australian BHP Billiton, both shareholders of Samarco, have committed to repairing the social and ecological damages to the tune of 6 billion Euros. But in a country racked by corruption, victims are finding it hard to believe their promise.
