The peace negotiations started in 2013 between the AKP and the PKK raised hopes for the Kurds of an end to the violence and a better representation of their political rights.
Since then, the pro-Kurd HDP party’s electoral successes were followed in 2015 by unprecedented attacks on Turkish soil, aimed at militants from the party.
The PKK became fully reactivated in July 2015 to impose autonomy, and a percentage of Kurdish youth started trench warfare in Cirze, Nusaybin and Diyarbakir. The Turkish state responded by a total war, attacking the militants with heavy weaponry in urban surroundings.
