The German garden of Hermannshof houses magnificent flowerbeds of perennial plants – which bloom and flower anew spontaneously each year – that welcome its visitors. In the 1980s, Hermannshof initiated a full-fledged esthetic revolution in garden design.
It has become an exemplar in public space planning in Europe and beyond. The garden is implanted in the heart of the Weinheim market town, in Badische Bergstrasse. This region is one of Germany’s warmest. Its conditions have favored the blossoming of a great variety of plants and trees. Its gardeners observe and test the growth of perennial plants in different types of habitats: sunny or shaded, dry or moist. The designed flowerbeds thus are an inspiration to other landscapers.
It had been a local industrial family’s leisure park for more than a century – the Freudenbergs. But while the domain still belongs to them, it is now being handled by the Freudenberg foundation and the city of Weinheim. It was opened to the public in 1983.
