Every day, some 2,500 children die of pneumonia worldwide, resulting in around one million child mortalities a year. Vaccination would save many of these lives, and a vaccine does exist, but its cost is often prohibitive.

Pneumonococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) costs more than $150 per person in India, and this rises to more than $400 in Jordan in the private sector. The NGO Doctors Without Borders has been denouncing this pricing policy for years, and is negotiating with the only two manufacturers, GSK and Pfizer, to bring the price down to $5 per child. In India, where the disease kills tens of thousands of newborns every year, the Serum Institute of India has undertaken to produce a pneumonia vaccine for $6, which would break GSK and Pfizer’s duopoly.
