The end of the Marxist guerilla movement has given rise to a new kind of violence in Colombia: A war of influence and power.

Officially, Colombia’s paramilitary groups that sewed terror in the country for many years were demobilized a decade ago. In reality, they still control part of the narcotics business in more than 20 states. Some groups, like Los Urabeños or the Gulf Clan, have up to 12,000 members.
The withdrawal of the FARC left a vacuum in areas where profitable business like coca plantations or illegal gold mining flourish. As such, the paramilitary groups clearly want to regain control of these regions, especially as the state is virtually absent there.
