Starvation wages, infernal rates, harassment: the “made in Europe” does not guarantee better working conditions… Zara, H&M, Adidas, Fashionable: leading brands of international renown have chosen the “made in Romania”.
Textile is the foremost export industry of the country. About 7,000 textile businesses employ more than 200,000 workers – most of the women.
If Asia’s production costs are still competitive, Romania enjoys two competitive assets that are way more powerful on the European market: the minimum wage amounts to 322 euros before taxes and the country is able to produce and deliver the goods in less than a week. This represents considerable savings from a logistical and payroll point of view, but also a deplorable situation on the human side… The workers toil in tenuous conditions without any kind of control, with fear in their chests. A paltry wage, infernal work rates, threats and insults. This is an obvious violation of labor law, yet it is met with stony silence as the employees fear for their job…
