They are biologists, engineers or botanists. Yet they intervene with battle fatigues, machine guns and bulletproof vests. They are the members of a special unit that is unique in the world.

The Ibama – Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources – Specialized Inspection Group was created to fight the environmental crime outbreak in the Amazon. The world’s biggest rainforest is now more than ever under threat.
Deforestation has risen by about 30% in 2016 – a record. This massive resumption of forest clearing and illegal gold mining was accompanied by an explosion of violence, all in the name of business. Ibama’s interventions in recent years attempting to dismantle clandestine gold mines and unplanned deforestation zones have become even more dangerous. Criminals are now heavily armed and defend themselves without any qualms. Its defenders are now the first victims; the task awaiting them is immense.
Although Brazil committed to end deforestation by 2030 during the 2015 Paris Accords on global warming, the Ibama’s means seem rather paltry. Can the Brazilian government hold its promise despite being under the agro-food industry lobbies’ heavy influence?
