Overlooking the Dordogne region’s valley, the Marqueyssac hanging gardens are hooked on a formidable rocky outcrop. The estate’s origins go back to the seventeenth century but a local notary – Julien de Serval – acquired it in the nineteenth century.

He designed the original pleasure gardens of the place by planting exclusively 150.000 boxwood bases. Then the garden slowly fell into abandonment before Kleber Rossillon bought it back in 1996. Fascinated with the place since his childhood, he turned the abandoned gardens into a magnificent domain open to the public. Alain Barraton – head gardener of the Versailles gardens – is Marqueyssac’s godfather. The garden plays a considerable role in the history and heritage of French and European boxwood.
