Since June 2017, a huge part of Muscovite memory is crumbling away. A law – approved by Putin and the mayor’s office – has authorized the demolition of the Khrushchevkas.

Those five-story buildings were built on order of President Nikita Khrushchev in the 50s to tackle the infamous housing problems that Moscow then knew – but they often have not aged well. Oftentimes worn-out and unsafe, 4.500 of them will be brought down. Almost a million Muscovites are losing their homes in the process, but they will be relocated for free in an equivalent residence.

Some are happy about it, others not so much: the opposition makes the case that under the guise of improving living conditions for poorer Muscovites, the mayor’s office is actually trying to recover spacious and attractive land in the downtown area – so they can build more profitable luxurious buildings instead… Muscovites have thus demonstrated; they are organizing and are trying to oppose the evictions.
