Tunisia keeps taking steps towards improving gender equity; but some strongholds of patriarchy are still holding out against progress.

Since July 2017, Tunisian women can marry non-Muslims– a first for a Muslim country – and a new law was voted to combat violence against women. Other reforms are being drafted – notably the one concerning equal treatment concerning inheritance. In Tunisia, women cannot receive more than half of what their brothers inherit. But the confrontation between proponents and opponents of equality in matters of succession is harsh. Tunisia is seen as a pioneer in the Arab world since the adoption of the Code of Personal Status in 1956 – most notably including the abolition of polygamy, forced marriages and repudiation. But the former president Habib Bourguiba did not manage to give Tunisian women equality in inheritance then. The case has thus been brought back to the table – 60 years later – in a divided society.
