Interrupted by the pandemic a year ago, the “Hirak” – a popular movement of opposition to the Algerian regime – might be making a comeback for its second anniversary.

The embers of revolt were first re-ignited in Kherrata, a Berber town 350 kilometers from Algiers. It is from there that the first demonstrations started on 16 February, 2019. For this small mountain village, the movement felt like a tidal wave: led by political opponents to the regime, a joyful crowd took to the streets. Two years later, to the day, the demonstrations have resumed.
For a fortnight, we followed the growing dissent in Algerian streets. We went from Kherrata to Algiers, where tens of thousands of demonstrators forced their way through police roadblocks. Under the ashes of COVID, the fire of the Hirak still burns.
