On February 22, 2019, Algerians were outraged by Abdelaziz Bouteflika's fifth candidacy. Thousands took to the streets to protest. The president's resignation was brought about in a mere matter of weeks. And yet today the army has regained power and is ruling with an iron fist.
The struggle goes on however. People demand a radical change in the political system. After regaining power, the army has stopped tolerating protests. Arrests, repression and censorship have resumed. The youth feels betrayed by the military: the latter have managed to use the formers’ demands to strengthen their power and have imposed the election of a president of their choosing. Faced with these numerous disappointments, the movement is running out of steam. Yet it is still holding fast, by hook or by crook.
