In Ivory Coast, the Victor Houali center treats mentally ill people from all over the country. It is located in the small village of Trinlé-Diapleu, which has a population of a thousand.
Here, there are no walls or enclosures to separate villagers and patients. Patients are free to come and go. This method of care was introduced in the 1980s by two French psychiatrists, Philippe Bichon and Frédérique Drogoul, both working at the La Borde clinic in France. The cases can be very serious, with acute psychotic episodes or forms of severe schizophrenia. This psychiatric hospital is unique in the world. However, its support work gives very good results.
