The Cubans have fulfilled a lifelong dream of environmentalists around the world: they have converted their entire island to organic farming.

Presently, more than 4,000 urban farms produce 1.5 million tons of vegetables without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
This small agricultural miracle is due to an accident of history: because of the Soviet Union’s collapse in the early 1990s, Cuba suddenly lost its main supplier of pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides. It could not turn to the Americans or any other Western country because of the embargo imposed by the United States since 1962. In order to avoid mass famine, Cuba then had no choice but to develop natural alternatives reducing the use of chemicals to almost zero.
As a result, bees have never been healthier. The island's honey is guaranteed to be pesticide-free and has become a worldwide export. Despite its shortages, Cuba has become an agricultural case-study... Thirty years without pesticides vividly demonstrate that another approach is possible.
