The worst industrial disaster in history is still taking lives. 35 years after the deadly gas leak at the Union Carbide plant, people in Bhopal are isolated from the outside world and the needed heatlh services. To compensate for the inefficiency – or even absence – of public health services, two NGOs provide victims with free healthcare.

In Bhopal, tragedy struck in 1984. More than 40 tons of toxic gases leaked from the plant, killing thousands. The estimated death toll varies between 5,000 and 25,000 people. 150,000 victims suffer from chronic diseases, and more than 574,000 people have been exposed to these gases.
And yet 35 years later, the factory is still there, in the middle of a densely populated area. The area was never decontaminated. The same goes for the evaporation basins, where toxic waste has been buried. The ground water is still heavily contaminated and it is poisoning the inhabitants. More and more children are being born with physical or mental disabilities in polluted neighborhoods.
