In Morocco, the sand mafia turns beaches into gold... and makes them disappear. The sand, an essential material for concrete making, is subjected to vast illegal extractions. The traffic scale is such that, in places, entire beaches have disappeared.

Thousands of people live in the country. Armed with shovels and escorted by donkeys loaded with baskets, they come every day to extract sand from the waves for 6 euros a day. For the past ten years, the construction boom has made people forget all environmental concerns by creating an underground market that  legal channels cannot satisfy. Major development works, construction of new cities, hotel complexes by the sea, the kingdom has started titanic projects.

Rare are those who dare to rebel against the sand mafias. On the construction sites, the promoters claim that they do not know where does the sand they use come from... However, the raw sea sand, used in construction, can cause collapses. Every year, the construction sector counts nearly 60,000 accidents.
