Since Thailand's government was taken over by a military coup in May 2014, a worrying political climate has set in. The regime headed by General Prayut Chan-O-Cha has steadily introduced more and more repressive measures.

For over two years now, Thailand's armed forces have been reinforcing their stranglehold and weakening the apparatus of democracy. Demonstrations and peaceful gatherings are now strictly banned on pain of imprisonment. There have been numerous accusations of lèse-majesté since the military came to power.

Freedom of expression and freedom to act are a distant memory for the distraught Thais. All the Thai people want is to be able to exercise their fundamental rights as citizens, and drastic measures such as intimidation, arrests and imprisonments have merely broadened the opposition to the junta. But what can they do? Anyone who takes a stand ends up in prison or being condemned to death. Moreover, the Thais are on their own. For the moment, the international community has chosen to stand by and observe the chaos, as something closely resembling a dictatorship evolves in Thailand.
