Every year, hundreds of thousands of people from South America attempt to illegally cross the border between the United States and Mexico – trying to escape the violence in their homeland. Donald Trump's policies have made them unwelcome in a country where anything is possible.
They are Salvadorians, Hondurans or Mexicans. Last year, more than a million of them were arrested within the United States after illegally entering the country. The Trump administration has been treating them like common criminals: sent to prison for months, forced to wear electronic bracelets, or deported before they could even apply for asylum.
José is a 25-year-old Salvadoran; he risks being killed by gangs in his country. He is now seeking asylum and protection in the United States.
