After fighting for two years in Syria with the Kurds of the YPG, Michael Maldonado, also known as Zafer Ronin, returned home to Emporia, Kansas.

The 32-year-old American is now back to his normal life, settling into a dull daily routine of gym workouts, shooting practice and nights out in the city's seedy bars.
He recounts his Syrian experience, which will remain forever engraved in his memory, and looks back on his emotional scars, his past and the deep motivations that led him to fight for the Kurdish cause against the Islamic State.
