Following the exodus of 100,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia at the end of September, Azerbaijan regained full control of this territory which, under international law, belongs to it.

Local and international journalists were escorted through the area, now deserted by Armenian civilians. A few rare free testimonies still emerge, such as those of the Red Cross.
By contrast, Bas-Karabagh, which was reclaimed in 2020, is teeming with work in progress. The painstaking work of demining the territory is well under way and infrastructure is springing up like mushrooms.
Baku's ambition is to repopulate the region with the 800,000 Azerbaijani refugees who fled the Armenian advance during the first Karabakh war, which was lost in 1993.
