The vitality of the Austrian artistic and literary scene is exceptionally sophisticated and violent, and bears witness to a long creative tradition.

Formerly at the cultural and historical heart of Europe for a long time, contemporary Austria seems resigned to its loss of influence. Yet at times, the “Alpine Republic” crops up in European, social and political current affairs.
This film seeks to provide a clearer understanding of the complex identity of Austria today by questioning some of its most emblematic writers: Josef Winkler, Robert Menasse and Arno Geiger. From cosmopolitan Vienna to conservative Carinthia, a country torn by contradictions, and a fertile ground of Europe, paints its own portrait.
