Born in an Austrian Jewish family, the writer discovered Brazil in 1936, when fleeing Nazism.  Impressed by Rio de Janeiro’s beauty and its expansive nature, Stefan Zweig also admired Brazil's nonchalance and pacifism. This environment stimulated his writing like no other. 

While in Petrópolis, he wrote some of his most inspirational books; it was there he committed suicide with his wife, in 1942, thinking the war was lost.
