From Adam and Eve to the present day, this investigation takes a peak at the playful and imaginative ways in which artists have slalomed around the poles of morality to beat censhorship at its own game.

Fig leaf, flower, jewel box, mirror, a tress of hair or swath of fur…. for women, highly symbolic objects for men as branches, club, snakes and of course swords… the resulting works illustrate how genitalia were represented over the centuries, from Antiquity to the present, and also reflect the society they came out of, where hypocrisy, laws and scandals opposed artists who reimagined the restrictions of censorship by playing with the accessories, amusing themselves and perhaps their sponsors in the process.

Today, making a film on the fig leaf lets us approach great works with plenty of humor and scholarship, and also evokes the mischievous resistance of renowned artists over time.
